Yelp Donates $ 100,000 for Austin’s Winter Business Preparations

AUSTIN (KXAN) – Yelp, the website based on consumer reviews, is launching a Holiday Winterizing Fund to help small businesses in the area cover the costs of preparing for the winter season. Yelp users can nominate their favorite local businesses to receive money for extreme weather preparations.

“We have set up a wintering fund. It is a fund of $ 100,000. We help businesses in the Austin and San Antonio areas prepare for the extreme weather conditions we can experience in winter, as we all discovered last February. It can wreak havoc. We wanted to help with the preparations, ”explained Katie Burbank, Director of the Yelp Community.

“Anyone in Texas can nominate their favorite local business in Austin, San Antonio and surrounding areas until December 17,” she added, “to potentially earn $ 10,000 to help with things like caulking and waterproofing, installation of pipes, installation of generators. hand.”

Yelp is often associated with restaurant reviews from your peers, but any business venture can be nominated. This includes your favorite mechanic, favorite cafe, or favorite pediatrician’s office, as long as it’s a small business. Yelp defines a small business as one with fewer than six locations.

“Your big chains, they don’t necessarily need your help this winter. They might be doing great, especially after the Black Friday sales, ”Burbank said. “We want to focus on those little moms and dads who truly are the heart and soul of Austin, San Antonio and the surrounding areas.”

Burbank said that having Yelp users name their favorite locations gets them a part of the action.

“We want to give people the opportunity to take part in the action by truly showing love to their local business. It’s one thing to log into Yelp to write a review. Which is amazing. It’s another thing to say “hey, I love you so much, I nominated you to win $ 10,000 to help with these winter preparations”.

Yelp will be awarding $ 10,000 each to 10 local businesses as part of the $ 100,000 fund.

Last winter, Yelp’s data reflected the need in Texas for service professionals. Consumer interest in Texas in February and March of this year increased in categories such as chimney sweeps (+ 64%), chimney services (+ 30%), generator installation and repair (+ 30%), installation and repair of water heaters (+ 16%) and plumbing (+ 10%).
