Snow trail maintenance underway on hundreds of miles of local trails | Outside

Miles and miles of outdoor trails will soon be ready for all your winter activities. The Montour Area Recreation Commission (MARC) directs trail preparation in Montour County.

MARC has been able to steadily improve the quantity and quality of trails in and around Montour County through continued support from the Montour County Commissioners Tourism Fund (Montour County Hotel Tax), administered by the Columbia-Montour Visitors Bureau.

Last week, MARC personnel traveled to Chambersburg to deliver a new SnowDog Sport B13MER, along with a cross-country groomer attachment and a utility sled. MARC expects the delivery of a single track snow groomer in the near future.

Once conditions are in place (over 6 inches of snow expected for at least several days), MARC staff and volunteers will get to work preparing some of our region’s most popular trails for cross-country skiing. and the fat tire mountain bike.

Specifically, MARC plans to prepare trails for cross-country skiing in the Hess Recreation Area (Hess Loop Trail), Montour Preserve (Chilisuagi Trail and Goose Woods Trail), and the North Branch Canal Trail. MARC plans to prepare the trails of the Hopewell Park / Danville Borough Farm Trail System for fat tire mountain biking. Additional trails may be added if conditions permit.

According to Bob Stoudt, Director of MARC, “MARC has worked for over sixteen years to acquire, develop and promote park and trail resources in our community. We are extremely fortunate to now have over 38 miles of trails on over 2,100 acres of publicly accessible land throughout Montour County, including over 26 miles of trails under MARC management.

In Montour and Columbia counties combined, that total grows to more than 150 miles of trails on nearly 100,000 acres of publicly accessible land at 70 locations. Residents and visitors to our region will find a wide range of outdoor recreation options in the winter.

“The addition to MARC’s Snowdog vehicle and accessory inventory will allow us to take these opportunities to the next level so even more visitors can get outdoors and enjoy the incredible resources our region has to offer. “said Stoudt.

Stoudt noted that 2022 will mark the 50th anniversary of the Montour reserve. Built by PPL in 1972 to provide a backup water source for the nearby coal-fired Montour Mill, Chillisquaque Lake and the surrounding Montour Reserve have been a year-round destination for outdoor recreation and environmental education for generations of local residents and visitors.

“Ice fishing, winter hiking and winter education programs like the maple syrup program have always been very popular at the Montour reserve,” Stoudt noted. “The possibility of starting to groom the cross-country ski trails at the Réserve in 2022 is a great way for us to celebrate the site’s 50th anniversary. »

MARC’s efforts to make Montour County a year-round outdoor recreation destination are also supported by many businesses and community organizations: Civil LIVIC; Brookside Nursery ; Ski Valley Bike, Board, Ski & Skate; Stetler insurance; Sori Lawn Care and Landscaping; Frost Valley; Animal Care Center – Danville, PA; and TS and Karen Scott.
