Reinvent outdoor living with Trio Landscaping

The past few years have brought with them a host of new standards, as well as created more demand and, consequently, material shortages in a myriad of markets. Landscaping TrioOwner and creator Diana Grundeen adds another side effect to this list: the need for patience. “Over the past few years, people have realized they have more space than they once thought,” says Grundeen. “We’re all spending more time in outdoor living spaces, and it gives us the opportunity to help people understand that there are new ways to look at lawns and yards.”

Trio Landscaping is a design-focused landscaping company based in the Twin Cities that has evolved and adapted the concept of yard and sidewalk curb appeal in today’s marketplace. Grundeen brings 25 years of experience to her passion and thrives on thinking of creative and unique solutions to improve the lives of her clients. “We educate people on our process and determine if they’re the right person for us to work with,” she says.

When contacting Grundeen and her team, potential clients can expect an initial investment of a full one-hour virtual consultation via Zoom (not on-site). This call typically covers topics ranging from yard slopes and elevations for patios and plantings to privacy issues and landscape expectations for easier maintenance. From there, either the client gathers inspiration to go it alone, or Trio draws up a landscaping plan, stops at the property for on-site measurements, and finally presents the final plan via Zoom. “We can pull resources in real time and go over all the details in that final meeting,” says Grundeen.

Then comes the fun part – using the plan to order materials and accessories the client might want (eg pergola, lighting), followed by installation. This is where patience is needed the most, as the installation schedule is further out than people are used to. Trio is currently working on projects that came to fruition in early fall 2021.

“Drought conditions, increased demand and shortages have created a universal backlog in the region,” says Grundeen. “Additionally, the long winter has impacted our spring schedule, pushing us further into May and June than is normal.” The take away key? Schedule your consultation and design meeting as soon as possible, and you’re probably looking at an installation date in the spring or summer of 2023.

If you’re just looking for design consultation, that’s also an option, and less restrictive. Grundeen is passionate about encouraging clients to think beyond what was traditionally imagined for a courtyard or garden landscape. “A yard can be so much more than just a lawn,” she says. “Everything needs tending, from mowing the grass to planting more plants for pollinators. There are so many alternatives for creating intentional lawns.

The Grundeen team has grown with the business, acknowledging the changing times when it comes to renovating and reinvigorating outdoor living for their clients. They want families to truly enjoy their outdoor space based on their needs, wants, lifestyle and hobbies. Take for example a recently completed project where the client was a self-proclaimed grill fanatic. The final result ? A beautiful outdoor cooking area with ample room for multiple grills including smokers, gas and charcoal where the guest can easily swap out these parts. Grundeen adds, “I love helping someone reinvent how they live and how they can truly enjoy their space.”
