Pamplin Media Group – Clawson Heating & Air Conditioning connects to comfort

Family-owned heating and cooling business continues to grow with new location, new staff and new customer base

During the last week of July, as temperatures in East Multnomah County soared above 100 degrees, a company dedicated to community comfort worked long overtime hours to keep everyone safe.

Clawson Heating & Air Conditioning, which has been a staple of the Gresham business community for two decades, had crews working in overdrive the week of July 25. In total, they installed and repaired 1,392 cooling units, prioritizing long-time customers and anyone threatened by high heat.

“Heating and cooling isn’t super exciting until you have it,” said Amy Clawson, general secretary who opened the business alongside her husband Mike in 1995.

Although the heat waves of the past two summers have shone the spotlight on Clawsons, it doesn’t take a traumatic weather event to spur the family business to action. The growing team continues to expand its footprint within the community – with a new physical location, a growing client base, and programs to give back to local nonprofits.

“We bring a lot of customer service to the heating industry,” Clawson said. “We want to change people’s ideas about the industry and be part of this community.”

Clawson Heating & Air Conditioning, 143 NE Elliott Ave., focuses on residential forced air systems as well as ductless heat pumps, but that only scratches the surface of everything it offers. All HVAC related needs fall under their purview, with a service radius of approximately 30 miles from their office.

“When we do an installation, we take care of the whole game — financing, permits, subcontractors, inspections, repairs, handovers — it’s full service,” Clawson said.

It all started with Mike Clawson’s desire to own his own business. He had worked for a multitude of companies for years, and with that experience he knew he could chart his own course. Amy joined the namesake firm to help set up the LLC and pledged a year in the office to keep things running smoothly.

“This year has gone a little longer than expected,” she said with a laugh.

The booming business started in Troutdale from their home, moved to the Birdsdale Business Center and then to a stand-alone structure further afield. Either way, Clawsons continued to overtake those gaps, necessitating the move. That’s what spurred the latest move to its current location along Elliott Avenue – and even now there are whispers of future expansion.

“We continue to pass buildings and parking lots,” Clawson said.

Currently, the company, which is looking to hire, has five service technicians, four installation teams, and the office team that prioritizes customer service above all else.

“The people of East County are great, we have a lot of repeat customers and we appreciate those interactions over the years,” Clawson said. “If you have a need, we will be there for you.”
