Pa. Turnpike Jumps Into Solar As It Explores Electrified Highway Services | New

PITTSBURGH (TNS) – The Pennsylvania Turnpike is embarking on solar power generation to power its maintenance and office buildings with a long-term goal: to use solar power to electrify portions of the toll road so electric vehicles can be recharged during their journey.

The agency is awaiting an occupancy permit to open a solar field at a maintenance facility and new regional headquarters along Turnpike Route 66 near Jeannette. It will be the first in a series of solar installations planned across the state – including New Stanton and the Harrison City area in Penn Township – as the toll highway takes advantage of the property it already owns. to develop solar power and sell any additional capacity it produces.
