CLEVELAND — As more blankets of snow blanket northeast Ohio, many residents are struggling to keep up with snow removal around their homes, especially sidewalks.
Towns like Garfield Heights are again reminding residents to clear their sidewalks, but with so much snow it has been difficult. Mayor Matt Burke says the concerning incoming calls are incessant.
“Most of the calls we get are basically about security issues,” Burke explained. “We don’t want anyone walking on this main road when they can walk on the sidewalks.”
The mayor acknowledges that neighbors are helping neighbors as part of the solution, but a new free app called “Greenpal” could help even more. The app started out offering only lawn care and landscaping services and has now added snow removal services. It works like Uber or Lyft. Once the application is downloaded, you enter the address of where the service is needed. Then vetted companies and vendors bid for the job.
“The owner could see the seller’s ratings, reviews, and price, and then decide who they want to work with,” said Gene Caballero, co-founder of Greenpal. “They must be 18 years old. They must have a valid driver’s license. They must have a valid bank account. They must have a valid social security number. So these are just small ways we can make sure these guys are who they say they are.
You can also order and pay for services for family members or friends.
When the work is completed, the supplier uploads photos of the completed work, which requires your approval. Your credit card will not be charged until this happens.
“There are no service fees or convenience fees or anything like that,” Caballero said.
