Lack of snow causes difficulties for snow removal companies

MILWAUKEE – We’ve barely had any major snowstorms this season. While some people may be happy that they don’t have to deal with snow as often, some people who depend on Wisconsin winters are suffering.

“That’s quite unusual,” said Paul Terry, owner of Paul Terry Services Lawn Care and Landscaping.

In Terry’s 10 years in the snow removal business, he says he has never faced a winter like this.

Since the start of the winter season, southeastern Wisconsin has seen a total of about 7 1/2 inches of snowfall. Normally, at this point, the region would see almost three times as many.

“It’s kind of absurd that we didn’t get as much snow as we did,” said Dan Neary, owner of RockStar Landscaping.

For these companies, the lack of snow causes a lot of financial difficulties.

“We’re not making as much money as last year,” Terry said.

Terry says that normally at this time of year, his phones are ringing non-stop with clients requesting his services. But without so much snowfall, it doesn’t have much to offer.

“My guys who work year-round with us, they’re unemployed right now. So at least they’ve had some stream of income,” Terry said.

Meanwhile, Neary has his fingers crossed that Wisconsin makes up for its lack of snow next month.

“Most of our activity last year fell in February, so we’re kind of banking on at least the possibility of still having snow in February,” Neary said.

But for now, he is keeping his staff busy with other services this season until spring arrives.

“You always have to have other alternatives like tree removal, obviously you have to keep the guys busy, but you can’t rely 100% on snow,” Neary said.
