How to save money, winterize your home

CINCINNATI — We’ve had an abnormally hot November, but that’s coming to an end. As temperatures begin to drop, your energy bill will likely increase.

Now is the time to make sure your home is winter ready.

“There are so many steps homeowners can take to keep their homes efficient,” said Amanda Kinsella, of Logan A/C & Heat Services.

Experts say you might consider replacing your heating system with a more efficient model.

Kinsella said multi-stage systems help keep the air mixed in your home.

“By doing this, it will lead to far fewer hot and cold spots in your home. Fewer drafts,” she said. “It will definitely help with the ambiance of your home. If your home is warmer, you can definitely get away with turning your thermostat back a few degrees.”

An inexpensive tip is to make sure your furnace filter is clean. Logan A/C & Heat service technicians recommend checking your filter once a month.

Matthew Tyner of Thomas & Galbraith Heating, Cooling & Plumbing said the most common call they get when it starts to get cold is for furnace filters.

Another way to cut costs, Tyner said, is to turn your thermostat down a few degrees when you leave for the day. He said a common mistake people make is turning the thermostat down too much.

“Some people will bring it down a lot, but we have to keep in mind that when we drop it several degrees, it will take the system a lot longer to catch up,” Tyner explained. “And when he tries to catch up. He expends a lot of energy to catch up.

If you feel that cold air may be entering through windows or doors, there are steps you can take.

“There are things we can do to really seal the windows that can be a little tighter or the doors really around that bottom edge of the door where there might be some gap,” Tyner said.

He said you can put a towel around the bottom edge of the door to help conserve energy. Leaving your garage door open can also let unwanted cold air into your home.

“So be sure to close garage doors and especially if you have a water heater in your garage,” he said.

There are no indicators of lower energy prices in the near future. It is recommended that you keep track of your heating system maintenance every six months, rather than waiting for something to go wrong. Preventive measures will end up saving you money in the long run.
