Here’s how much laundry detergent you should use

It is almost certain that you are using too much laundry detergent.

At least that’s the conclusion of Consumer Reports, which states that you only need 1.5 ounces of detergent for a typical laundry load.

How much is this? About a shot glass of detergent. If you are washing a larger amount of laundry or your clothes are particularly dirty, you may want to consider using twice that amount.

But these amounts should be enough every time you do laundry. Of course, you can continue to use more detergent if you wish. But not only is it wasteful, but it also risks adding to water pollution in your community.

So forget about using the lines on the detergent measuring cup to figure out how much you need. Additionally, CR says:

“Be sure not to rely on the detergent level indicator on the washer dispenser, as this represents the maximum amount of detergent the washer can handle.”

If you want to take your laundry to the next level, you can skip the use of detergent altogether. We explain why this notion isn’t as crazy as it sounds in “3 Easy Ways to Get Laundry Soap for Next to Nothing.”
