Janitorial company Golden Care continues to provide home care services to seniors in North County and San Diego while taking precautions to protect them as the COVID-19 pandemic continues.
“A lot of our customers are asking for immunized caregivers,” said Porsha Vogt, a native of Rancho Santa Fe who founded the company about eight years ago. “It was difficult at first, but now more and more of our caregivers are getting vaccinated, so it helps. But what’s scary, even with the vaccine, people get COVID with this variant. But that’s why even if they have the vaccine, we make them wear masks while they work just to take precautionary measures. “
Vogt, who attended R. Roger Rowe School and Torrey Pines High School, added that Golden Care caregivers also use hand sanitizer and gloves. If they feel sick, the company has them stay home and get tested if they show symptoms of COVID-19.
After working in finance for about 10 years in New York City, Vogt realized that she “wasn’t passionate at the end of the day.” Inspired by the relationship she had with her Aunt Alice, who had multiple sclerosis and died just over 20 years ago, Vogt decided to turn to eldercare.
“The more I learned about it, the more I fell in love with it,” she said. “It was the best of both worlds because I got to own my own business and then work with seniors and help families.”
She and her family were unaware of the home care options that could have helped her aunt.
“I think if we had known she would have lived a lot longer,” Vogt said.
Golden Care now serves just over 100 seniors in San Diego County. Some of the services they provide to seniors include light housekeeping, helping them take a bath or shower, get dressed, do grocery shopping, and have basic company.
“I think with our reputation we get a lot of word of mouth referrals, and from that it has grown over the years,” said Vogt.
She adds that the competition is tough, but the company attracts the best caregivers. Golden Care caregivers are licensed, bonded, insured, and undergo background checks.
“We pay more to our caregivers to attract a better quality of caregiver and to provide the janitorial care that seniors deserve,” said Vogt.
