Connecticut landscaping crews see revenue plummet due to drought

The eastern part of the state is experiencing extreme drought, and others are severe to moderate levels. The drought is expected to continue.

COVENTRY, Connecticut – Drought conditions continue to impact the state, especially businesses that depend on the benefits of rain.

In the eastern part of the state, extreme drought conditions leave landscaping crews high and dry.

“We have about 100 lawns that we tend to on a regular basis, but due to the drought the lawns have become dormant and we don’t mow as much,” said Rick Brosseau, owner of Milrick Lawn Service.

The drought means their mowing crews are waiting to see the grass grow.

Brosseau said mowing jobs are down about 30% due to the lack of rain, leading to a sharp drop in income.

“The mowing aspect is residual income that you always rely on. Last year we were busy mowing every week because of the rain,” Brosseau said.

With the drought conditions, leaves are already beginning to fall across the state, which will impact the duration and brightness of fall foliage.

“Normally we don’t see the leaves falling that early. I mean there are some in August and early September [but] normally we don’t see them in full swing until mid-October, Brosseau said.

Although the fall colors aren’t as vibrant, to keep your lawn colors green instead of brown, let the burnt grass rest.

A few inches of rain could do wonders for lawns and businesses.

“May the lawns get taller and greener,” Brosseau said. “Mow less, mow high and in your free time do something else.”
