BOONE – The Boone Fire Department responded to the scene of a structural fire call at the Watauga County landfill at 463 Landfill Rd. On December 27.

According to Boone Fire, the first fire engine and crew noticed sounds of fire coming from the transfer station building as they entered the facility from the door. Once the crew arrived at the transfer station, heavy fire was encountered inside.

Boone Fire said a large amount of trash was on fire inside the structure and threatened two heavy front loaders and a tractor trailer parked inside.

To control the blaze, Boone Fire used a bridge cannon mounted on the fire truck through the open garage door to perform the initial fire suppression. A firefighter then entered the structure and removed the front loaders and with the help of a fire department, a county employee entered the lower part of the building to remove the trailer from the tractor.

Boone Fire said ventilation was done to remove the smoke and increase visibility into the structure so that fire crews can continue to extinguish the fires. Boone Fire also used the front loader to remove smoldering trash and it was extended outside for complete extinction.

Watauga County Emergency Services Director Will Holt said Boone Fire and Watauga County Fire Marshals are investigating the blaze. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time, according to Boone Fire.

The initial call was a fire alarm sent at 8:07 p.m. and the structure fire call was sent at 8:21 p.m. The fire was brought under control at 9:30 p.m. and the Boone Fire Department cleared the area at 11:30 p.m.

The Watauga County Sheriff’s Office, Watauga Medics, Watauga County Emergency Management and the Watauga County Fire Marshal also responded to the scene.
